The highest priority for UN-HABITAT's Water and Sanitation programme is improving access to safe water and helping provide adequate sanitation to millions of low-income urban dwellers and measuring that impact. World leaders meeting at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 committed themselves to attaining the Millennium Development Goal 7, target 10 which aims to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015. In 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg added another target: to halve by 2015, the proportion of people who do not have access to basic sanitation. Although the task is enormous, it is not insurmountable. Improving access to water and sanitation in low income urban settlements is possible.

Lake Victoria Initiative set for major expansion

An agreement has been signed between the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, UN-HABITAT, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the governments of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda, which will set the stage for the expansion of the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative (LVWATSAN) to 15 towns in five countries.

Speaking at a reception he hosted at the Elysée in Paris for delegates attending a prelude meeting of the 6th World Water Forum, the president expressed his concerns about water issues which could be worsened by the issues such as population growth, environmental pollution, and climate change.

UN-HABITAT report on waste management launched

The UN-HABITAT global report Solid Waste Management in the World Cities was launched at the World Water Day celebrations in Nairobi by His Royal Highness The Prince of Orange, who is the chair of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB).
