Nairobi, 1 Aug 12

UN-Habitat and the Human Relief Foundation last week signed an Agreement of Cooperation to provide technical support to a project in Somalia

Under the agreement, Human Relief Foundation will provide technical expertise to jointly implement the project 'Solid and Liquid Waste Management in Somalia', within the framework of three UN-Habitat programmes.

The programmes are :UN Joint Programme on Local Governance (UNJPLG); Sustainable Employment Creation and Improved Livelihoods for Vulnerable Urban Communities in Mogadishu (SECIL) and Vacutug Development Programme.

The UNJPLG's overall objective is that local governance contributes to peace and equitable priority service delivery, including solid waste management, while the SECIL project aims at providing an enabling environment for investment and public-private partnership, and for improving the livelihoods of vulnerable people in urban and peri-urban areas of Mogadishu through employment creation again with a strong focus on solid waste management.

The Vacutug' programme aims at developing a low cost and fully sustainable system for emptying pit latrines in the unplanned or peri-urban areas of cities and in camps occupied by internally displaced persons.

Human Relief Foundation will bring expertise in a range of cutting edge and innovative solutions that will include agroforestry, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and resource recovery and reuse, thus creating sustainable livelihoods, enhancing food security and improving environmental sanitation, all important components for building future urban resilience in Somalia.
