Stockholm, 23 Feb 05

The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry has elected UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, as one of its eight foreign members.

The academy, founded in 1811, is an independent forum for the promotion of sustainable, environmentally friendly development. At a ceremony in Stockholm last month, the academy elected Mrs. Tibaijuka as one of eight foreign members. Mrs. Tibaijuka holds a Doctorate of Science in Agricultural Economics from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala.

Mr. Bruno Nilsson, Secretary of the Academy, welcomed Mrs. Tibaijuka to the Academy and highlighted the importance of Sustainable Forest Management in Africa. The Academy is currently undertaking a project together with the African Academy of Science in Nairobi and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency (Sida), and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is financing the project. The Academy would like to contribute to the creation of linkages between research and decision makers, and to strengthen the African forestry agenda on the international area.

The Academy which has 40 members, visited Kenya in February 2005 for a first-hand look at UN-HABITAT and its mandate. Members also met with farmers engaged in urban agriculture in Nairobi.
