Kuwait City, 25 Mar 04

An Agreement between UN-HABITAT and the government of Kuwait was signed on 23 March 2004 in Kuwait City by Mr. Khaled S. Al-Jarallah, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Daniel Biau, Deputy Executive Director, on behalf of Mrs. Anna K. Tibaijuka, USG, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT.

Under this agreement the government of Kuwait will finance an office of UN-HABITAT in Kuwait City for an initial period of 5 years, through an annual contribution of USD 330,000. The new office will disseminate UN-HABITAT information in the Arabic language, particularly the quarterly Habitat Debate. It will maintain a bilingual website linked to the main UN-HABITAT website, produce reports on the state of Arab Cities and organize workshops and training seminars on human settlements issues.

The office will be located in the premises of the Arab Towns Organization (ATO) which is headquartered in Kuwait. It is envisaged that the office be officially opened in October 2004 on the occasion of World Habitat Day.
