The Third Session of the World Urban Forum (WUFIII) being hosted by the Government of Canada in partnership with UN-HABITAT in Vancouver is focusing its attention on “Our Future: Sustainable Cities – Turning Ideas into Action”. UN-HABITAT welcomes you to this beautiful city. During the five days participants will discuss and debate as to how to make our cities better places to live.

Provision of water and sanitation is an essential pre-requisite for sustainable human settlements. Water and sanitation also provide a strategic entry point both to slum upgrading and for action in battling poverty which is the underlying theme for all Millennium Development Goals.

Realizing that many countries are falling behind in so far as the progress for achieving the WATSAN MDG targets are concerned, the Water, Sanitation and Infrastructure Branch (WSIB) of UN-HABITAT Nairobi is organizing Dialogues, Networking Events and Side Events under the Water for Asian Cities and Water for African Cities Programmes during the Third Session of the World Urban Forum (WUFIII) in Vancouver, Canada from 19-23 June 2006. The Sessions will cover wide range of issues relating to water, sanitation and human settlements including financing water and sanitation in Asian cities.

The objective of the various sessions on water and sanitation is to focus on new partnerships which may create more synergy and further help in accelerating sectoral investments in water and sanitation specifically targeted to the poor, in the developing regions of the world.

These sessions shall bring together Governments at national, state and local levels as important partners responsible for financing as well as governance and regulatory policies to meet the challenge of providing water and sanitation for human settlements. In addition, private sector in today’s globalizing world has a major role to play in mobilizing resources and improving delivery mechanisms together with international development finance institutions like the World Bank, regional development banks and NGOs involving communities at all levels to contribute in building a new consensus for addressing the issue of water and sanitation for sustainable human settlements.

Eminent Panelists including several Ministers from the Member countries, high officials of the International Financial Institutions including Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, Private Sector and also International Non-governmental Organisations are expected to join the Panels for discussion during the events.
