A UN-HABITAT staff member in Aghanistan, Mr. Yar Mohammed, was shot and killed this week in the western province of Farah by gunmen wielding automatic weapons. He was killed, and a colleague was wounded in the leg, when their car was stopped outside the village of Shoorab on the Farah Main Road at lunchtime on 12 September. Mr. Yar Mohammed, the Social Organizer of the National Solidarity Programme in Afghanistan, had just completed a working visit to the village. Police are investigating the murder. Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, expressed her heartfelt condolences at what she called “a senseless and needless act of barbarism against a UN employee who gave his life to help rebuild Afghanistan after years of conflict”. Mr. Yar Mohammed leaves two sons and three daughters. |
