Dubbed Property and Living Expo 2007, the one-week event which opened on Thursday features companies involved in various aspects of housing including construction, furnishing and housing finance. Firms exhibiting were as varied as their countries of origin and included companies from United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Kenya. In an opening speech Kenya’s Housing Minister Soita Shitanda reiterated his government’s commitment to availing affordable housing to low income earners especially those in the urban centres. “We will do this through making available good infrastructure, housing finance mobilization as well as enforcing slum improvement measures,” he said. Speaking on behalf of UN-HABITAT, an official said the agency explained how ways of innovative housing finance could help the urban poor uplift themselves. He said the agency was partnering with the Kenyan government in housing matters "because we believe in affordable, decent housing,” he said. |
