President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia has commended UN-HABITAT for its work in post disaster reconstruction in his country. During a colourful ceremony in the capital Jakarta, President Yudhoyono thanked the agency for coming to the rescue of Indonesians after the devastating disasters. The ceremony dubbed “Indonesia Thanks the World” also saw the head of state fete other agencies involved in the post tsunami and earthquake reconstruction in Aceh and Nias. In a unique partnership UN-HABITAT, UNDP, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Aceh Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) and the people of Aceh and Nias joined hands to kick start the lives which had been destroyed by the twin calamities. Last July, in commemorating two years of UN-HABITAT’s post-tsunami reconstruction work in Aceh and Nias, a photo book and video documentary was launched in Banda Aceh. At that point, the Aceh Nias Settlements Support Programme (ANSSP) had completed 3,500 houses and more than 1,000 were still under construction.
