While capital and major cities play a dynamic and strategic role in African development they are also faced with very distinct challenges. In almost all African countries a substantial proportion of the GDP is generated from capital cities, signifying their strategic importance in national economic development. They are the nodal centers and dynamic hubs for communication innovation, productivity, culture and global exchange. As centers of political power, African capital cities exert a vitality which in many instances permeates to the national level. Indeed, due to this systemic prominence, Mayors of African capitals and major cities occupy a very strategic and influential positioning in Africa in global development.
During the last decade, a number of capital cities have initiated major and innovative reforms aimed at improving systems of planning, management and governance. The results so far have been quite promising and impressive. UN-HABITAT will bring together these key architects of urban change and transformation to share their experiences and to develop common strategies for addressing their unique responsibilities at a two day meeting from 26 to 27 February 2009 in Nairobi, Kenya. |
