L-R: Mrs. Tibaijuka and Mr. Loizou.

The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Agis Loizou, has presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka.

The Executive Director briefed the envoy on the activities of UN-HABITAT worldwide, particularly on the activities of the organization in Cyprus. She commended the Government of Cyprus for supporting UN-HABITAT’s project in Lebanon. The USD683,000 project aims at promoting good governance for post-war reconstruction in Lebanon.

Mrs. Tibaijuka said that the aim of the project was to provide immediate assistance for shelter recovery and reconstruction in Southern Lebanon, while laying the foundation for long-term reconstruction and development in the country.

The Executive Director informed the envoy that UN-HABITAT encouraged Governments to contribute to the organization according to their relative economic strength.

Mrs. Tibaijuka invited the envoy and his country to participate actively in the Fifth Session of the World Urban Forum to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, later this month.

She congratulated Mr. Loizou on his appointment and wished him a happy tenure. She also presented the envoy with important UN-HABITAT publications, including The Global Report on Human Settlements.

Mr. Loizou assured the Executive Director of his country’s full commitment to the goals of UN-HABITAT. He added that his country was undertaking numerous development projects in Kenya.
He also assured the Executive Director that Cyprus would try to participate in WUF5 at the highest level.
