Nairobi, 25 Jan 11

UN-HABITAT has announced that the Kingdom of Bahrain will no longer be the venue for the next World Urban Forum to be held in 2012.

In a statement issued by the Executive Director, Joan Clos, the Agency said that due to political, economic, financial, logistical and administrative reasons, Bahrain had been forced to withdraw its offer to host the international event which had been scheduled for the end of March next year.

The Executive Director also stated that His Excellency Ebrahim Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Minister of Housing in the Kingdom of Bahrain, confirmed that the decision had not been taken lightly and did not reflect a change in the relationship between the country and UN-HABITAT.

As a result, a new venue would now have to be found.  Clos confirmed that the search for another host for this important event was already underway and asked for the support of all staff during the coming months of preparation.
