Objective

The UN-HABITAT Cities Lectures is a series organized by the Global Research Network on Human Settlements (HS-Net) to stimulate global dialogue on cities as well as capture and disseminate new thinking and approaches intended to address the multi-faceted challenges of sustainable urbanization. The Lecture Series is also designed to enhance global awareness of sustainable urbanization issues in particular, and of the Habitat Agenda in general.

Eligibility

  1. Prominent personality within the human settlements field with an international reputation and recognition;
  2. Significant and original contribution to human settlements research, thinking and practice;
  3. Development of cutting-edge,innovative and influential human settlements concepts and approaches; and
  4. Ability to deliver an exciting and thought-provoking lecture.

To the extent possible, the selection of prominent personalities will rotate regionally to ensure that the lectures are globally representative.

Lectures

Selected individuals are invited to deliver a thought-provoking Lecture during a session of the World Urban Forum which is held biennially. The Lecture may be delivered in any of the six official UN languages and is widely disseminated through various media, including a written copy which is posted at the UN-HABITAT website.

Award

The selected individual receives an Award of US10,000 and a commemorative plaque signed by the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT.

Nominations

Institutions or individuals can nominate candidates for the Lecture Series. Individuals may also nominate themselves. The HS-Net Advisory Board, composed of experienced researchers in the Human Settlements field, serves as the selection committee for the Award.
