Phase I of the water and sanitation initiative in the Lake Victoria region is being carried out in Homa Bay and Kisii in Kenya, Masaka and Kyotera in Uganda, Bukoba and Muleba in Tanzania and the border town of Mutukula. In most towns short-term interventions have been completed, comprising rehabilitation and expansion of existing infrastructure. Long-term interventions will be starting soon, and comprise significant investments in infrastructure, to reach the unserved parts of the population.

Phase II is under preparation and is going to be carried out under the regional cooperative framework of the East African Community, the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (see link EAC-LVBC), . The African Development Bank has in principle agreed to provide significant funding for this expansion which would cover 15 new towns, including 3 each in Burundi and Rwanda. Seven short-listed consulting firms have been invited to submit proposals for an appraisal study to be carried.
