Identified activities that will be conducted between March 2006 and December 2007 include: - construction of adequate individual and collective sanitation facilities in the Somgandé area and in two markets in the Ouagadougou city;
- preparation of guidelines and implementation of low-cost technologies adapted to conditions in Burkina Faso in the area of individual and semi - collective sanitation;
- capacity building, availing documents, making recommendations, laying strategies and creating sustainable mechanism for financing pro poor water and sanitation sectors in urban areas;
- implementation of a water demand management strategy for Ouagadougou city;
- implementation and refinement of an awareness strategy on issues related to water, sanitation and hygiene for the general public and as well as schools and communities;
- monitoring and evaluation of water and sanitation indicators in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals;
- capacity building of relevant institutions for the monitoring of WATSAN performance indicators in the attainment of Millennium Development Goals;
- integration of values-based water, sanitation and hygiene education (VBWSHE) in curricula of primary and secondary schools as well as teachers training colleges; therefore related documents will be elaborated and formal and informal teaching curricula under construction will be included in the programme approach;
- availability of water and sanitation in schools and pilot communities of the VBWSHE;
- gender mainstreaming approach is adopted and effective in the access to water, sanitation and hygiene as well as educational systems;
- organization of an information exchange programme between pilot institutions under the VBWSHE, twin schools protocols between national and international institutions.
The lessons learned and experiences from the different pilots and demonstrations will be documented made available for publication and public dissemination.
