For providing over 42,000 homes for the poor in 15 Latin American countries The Chile based non-governmental organization is being awarded for getting thousands of young volunteers, the private sector, universities and governments to raise awareness about slum conditions. This initiative has seen the organization build some 42,000 houses in 15 countries across Latin America. The project is having a major impact on the lives of the poor by giving them decent housing. This has helped reduce health problems, crime and other problems associated with extreme poverty.

World Habitat Day 2008

The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October each year as World Habitat Day. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
