The World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Mr. Michel Jarraud and Mr. Albert Diphoorn, UN-Habitat Urban Basic Services Branch Coordinator, this week took office as chair and vice-chair respectively of UN-Water for a customary two-year term. Both were elected at UN-Water’s 15th meeting in Stockholm in August 2011. |

A project jointly implemented by UN-HABITAT and the government of Kenya to help inhabitants of Soweto East, a settlement within Nairobi’s Kibera’s slums, upgrade their living conditions is having an unexpected spin-off- that benefit children with disabilities to better integrate into society. |

Mrs. Tibaijuka received the new Permanent Representative to UN-HABITAT from Eritrea on 5 December 2007. She told the envoy, Mr. Salih Omer Abdu, that under the first United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the period 2002-2006, UN-HABITAT had implemented the low-cost housing delivery system for Eritrea. |

World Water Week opened in the Swedish capital this week with impassioned warnings by the Prime Minister, Mr. Frederik Reinfeldt, and UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, that the world was not doing enough to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people without safe access to water and basic sanitation by 2015. |
