In early May 2009, Tropical Depression “Dante” caused severe damage in Sorsogon City and its environs, including loss of live. 2000 houses were damaged, two bridges (one critically connecting Sorsogon with the rest of Luzon Island) destroyed and in some parts of Sorsogon rice crops were also destroyed. |

| Tibaijuka pleads for energy for the urban poor |

New York, 16 May 06
UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka said in a statement to the fourteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development in New York that poor people living in towns and cities around the world had benefited very little from conventional energy policies, with an estimated 2 billion forced to cut down trees and use other traditional fuels for cooking because they had no electricity. |

| King of Thailand receives UN Award |

Bangkok, 25 Feb 04
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand was presented with the Habitat Scroll of Honour Award at a special ceremony on Wednesday by Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under-Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-HABITAT. The hand-crafted gold plaque was presented during an audience at the Krai Kangwon Palace.
