UN HABITAT and UNESCAP join forces to improve living conditions of urban poor in Asia

UN-HABITAT and UNESCAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, 26 February 2004 in a bid to ensure that the two organizations work more effectively towards reducing urban poverty in Asia. The Bangkok-based United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is the regional arm of the UN Secretariat in Asia and the Pacific.
Seeking better understanding of rural-urban linkages

At a time of rapid urbanization in Africa, institutions of higher learning have been challenged to highlight the importance of rural-urban linkages. UN-HABITAT's Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, posed this challenge at the Sokoine University of Agriculture 2003 convocation held on 27 November 2003. In her speech, Mrs. Tibaijuka stated that the strength of these linkages would determine the living conditions of people in both urban and rural areas of Africa. Such disciplines as agricultural economics needed to be linked to urban economics through regional development planning methods, cultural anthropology, geography, social research, ecology and engineering.

Brazilian cities will require $4 billion dollars over the next two decades to ensure that poor people have adequate housing, shelter and sanitation, the country’s Minister of Cities, Olivio Dutra, told a conference looking into ways of alleviating urban poverty.
UN-HABITAT seeks better coordination against rural and urban poverty

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka told the high-level segment of this year’s annual session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that there had to be better coordination against the twin problems of rural and urban poverty and under-development in developing countries.
Tibaijuka hails good relations between UN-HABITAT and ILO

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka has praised the good working relationship between UN-HABITAT and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Mrs. Tibaijuka said that ILO’s approach to providing work for the poor is essential for slum upgrading and for sustainable urbanization.
