The world’s slums are growing, and growing, with the number people living in such dire conditions now at the 1 billion mark – making up 32 per cent of the global urban population, according to UN-HABITAT’s new Global Report on Human Settlements 2003. The report published this month entitled, The Challenge of Slums, says the crisis is such that the world will see this figure double in the next 30 years unless a concerted effort is undertaken to alleviate the situation.

Plight of women in slums highlighted at International Women’s Day awards ceremony

The government of The Netherlands increases funding for UN-HABITAT

The Government of Netherlands has given over EUR 7.8 million (US $ 8.4 m) to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme within the framework of a two year Partnership Programme. This increase in funding, from one of its major donors, explicitly recognises the success of UN-HABITAT's work in implementing the Habitat Agenda. At the same time, the Dutch Government has more than doubled its annual contribution from EUR 453,780 to EUR 1.3 m (US $ 1.4 m) from 2003 onwards.

Delegates from around the world gathered at UN-HABITAT Headquarters Nairobi on Tuesday for an Expert Group meeting on Gender and Women’s issues in Human Settlements to ensure that problems facing women and children are not overlooked as governments make new efforts to improve the lives of urban slum dwellers. The three-day meeting was organised by UN-HABITAT with financial support from Norway.
Tibaijuka calls for globalization to solve shelter problems of local people

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under Secretary-General of the UN, and the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT stressed that there was a need to make globalization work for local people, create decent jobs, and provide decent shelter for the urban poor who are stranded in the slums and squatter settlements surrounding the cities of Africa. Mrs. Tibaijuka was speaking as the Chairperson of the second session, at the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization (WCSDG) held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 6-7 February 2003.
