| Pupils learn flood risk management in Kampala |

Pupils at Outspan Primary School in Bwaise, a poor, flood-prone neighbourhood in Kampala, Uganda, are learning how to collect meteorological data – and, along the way, something about how climate change increasingly will affect their lives. Two times a day they measure the amount of rain that has fallen over the past several hours at their school grounds. They then jot down observations on the duration of the rainfall and its effect in terms of flooding of their school yard. |

| I'm a city changer exhibition opens in Nairobi |

Art lovers, art critics, members of the public and a presidential aspirant all converged at a Nairobi lounge on Wednesday night to witness the official opening of a unique exhibition.
The exhibition by a talented Kenyan photographer Mutua Matheka aims at portraying the Kenyan capital in a positive light. He has taken artistic images of the major buildings forming the Nairobi skyline and he says he wants to inspire fellow Kenyans to appreciate the beauty of their city. |

A public convention was held during which a storm water project at the Bangr ' Wéogo city park in Ouagadougou was launched, thanks to funding of USD 12.6 million (XOF 6 billion) from the West African Development Bank. One of the most important projects undertaken by Burao Municipality in collaboration with UN-HABITAT was the planting of flower trees in the middle of the main roads of Burao in 2009. Many people were sceptical about the feasibility of the project at first, because they said that animals (goats) would climb the protection housing of the flowers and eat the leaves. |

How we plan, manage and live in our expanding cities determines, to a large extent, the pace of global warming.” |

UN-HABITAT regrets to announce the passing of Mr. Peter Swan. An Australian national born in 1946, he suffered a heart attack at his adoptive home in Bangkok, Thailand on 23 November, 2008. Mr. Swan joined the agency in 1989 as officer in charge of its information division. During this period he was responsible for all video presentations at the Habitat II ‘City Summit’ in Istanbul.From 1995 to 1998 he served in Bangkok, as Coordinator of the Community Development Programme for Asia, before assuming responsibility for UN-HABITAT’s Cambodia programme in Phnom Penh. |

An independent jury of international experts met in Dubai from 12-14 November 2008 and selected 12 winners for the 2008 Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment. The selection was made from a list of 48 initiatives, short-listed out of 436 submissions, previously reviewed by an independent Technical Advisory Committee in October 2008. The winners were all deemed to have made outstanding contributions to improving the quality of life in cities and communities. |

UN-HABITAT, the Myanmar Engineering Society, and the Association of Myanmar Architects, has organized a design competition in the southeast Asian country to come up with the best disaster-resistant buildings possible for areas devastated in May by Cyclone Nargis. The storm, the worst in the country’s history, claimed countless thousands of lives when it destroyed wide swathes of lands and property in the Ayeyarwady Delta. Within days of the disaster on 2 May, UN-HABITAT joined the humanitarian country team to start helping rebuild homes and lives. |
