Microsoft donates computers to Kenyan youth

Microsoft East Africa last Friday donated a total of 210 computers to the Youth Empowerment Programmes in Kenya under the Ministry of Youth and Sports four of which went to the One Stop youth centre, an initiative of City Council of Nairobi supported by UN-HABITAT.
UN-HABITAT partners with Australian mining company to supply water in Laos

UN-HABITAT on Monday announced a partnership deal with a mining company to deliver clean drinking water to residents of the Laotian town of Vilabouly as part of a the agency’s new drive to scale up water and sanitation services to those most in need.

The Green Brigade, a project that has seen some 1700 women being mobilized to clean up the streets of Ouagadogou in Burkina Faso, is the winner of this year’s Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa Habitat Award. A joint initiative of the Kingdom of Bahrain and UN-HABITAT, the award carries a cash prize of US$ 100,000.

Mrs. Tibaijuka decries urbanisation challenges in Africa

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka has decried rapid and unplanned urbanization in Africa which she said had led to unnecessary depletion, wastage and pollution of water resources. She spoke at the fourth Tokyo International Conference on African development 28-30 May. Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda pledged to double Japan’s annual net official development assistance to the African continent to USD 1.8 billion by 2012 and offer up to USD 4 billion of ODA loans to assist in developing mainly its infrastructure.
