India to step up funding to UN-HABITAT

The Government of India this week said it would increase its funding to UN-HABITAT. The announcement was made after Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos held talks with Kumari Selja, India's Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Culture.

The first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari Maathai of Kenya, died overnight at a Nairobi hospital. Her organization, the Green Belt Movement, said Wangari had been undergoing cancer treatment. She was 71.

This is the most prestigious award given by the United Nations in recognition of work carried out in the field of human settlements development. For the first time, UN-HABITAT is recognising a set of good practices as well.
