The Challenge of Slums – UN-HABITAT’s new Global Report on Human Settlements
	Nairobi, 1 Oct 03 The world’s slums are growing, and growing, with the number people living in such dire conditions now at the 1 billion mark – making up 32 per cent of the global urban population, according to UN-HABITAT’s new Global Report on Human Settlements 2003. The report published this month entitled, The Challenge of Slums, says the crisis is such that the world will see this figure double in the next 30 years unless a concerted effort is undertaken to alleviate the situation.


Tibaijuka calls on nations to implement the Millennium Development Goals
	, 29 Sept 03 The Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), Mrs. Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, has stressed the need for nations to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Mrs. Tibaijuka made the call today in Alexandria, Egypt, in a keynote address she presented while declaring open the Global Sustainable Cities Meeting and the Local Agenda 21 Programme 2003.

Hope rising for AIDS sufferers in Africa
	, 25 Sept 03 AIDS sufferers in cities across sub-Sahara Africa are set to benefit from a new strategy to fight the pandemic at the city level, an international HIV/AIDS conference in Nairobi was told this week. According to a new report presented at the conference, in cities and towns where the majority of sufferers live, a new strategy a is set to make a difference.

	, 10 Sept 03 UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka and two Nobel Prize laureates, Professor Daniel McFadden and Professor Dr. Erwin Neher, were awarded honorary Doctorate of Science degrees on Tuesday by the prestigious University College London.

	, 19 Aug 03 The bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad which resulted in the death of UN Special Representative to Iraq Sergio Vieira de Mello, and nearly a score of other UN staff was condemned as a “senseless” act by Anna Tibaijuka, UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director.


Major initiative to improve the slums of Kenya
	, 6 Aug 03 Kenya’s Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Mr. Raila Odinga, on Wednesday announced the Kenya Slum Upgrading Project, a major initiative aimed at improving the conditions of the slum dwellers in Nairobi, who make up over 60 per cent of the city's population.


Finland gives 750,000 euros for Kenyan slum upgrading
	, 5 Aug 03 The government of Finland has donated 750,000 euros for a pilot project to help UN-HABITAT promote sustainable neighbourhoods for Kenya’s urban poor. A signing ceremony on Tuesday at the Finnish embassy residence was addressed by Kenyan Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Raila Odinga, Minister of Lands and Settlements Amos Kimunya, the Finnish Chargé d’Affaires Kimmo Laukkanen and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka.


Africa asks UN-HABITAT to help fight urban poverty
