From the back streets to the catwalk

Children from the slums and back streets of Nairobi swapped their everyday wear for the latest high fashion to join Miss Universe and Miss Kenya on the catwalk at a fundraising evening to highlight the plight of street children. The 12 July event was arranged as part of the Exodus Initiative of the German Foundation for World Population (DSW).
UN-HABITAT seeks better coordination against rural and urban poverty

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka told the high-level segment of this year’s annual session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) that there had to be better coordination against the twin problems of rural and urban poverty and under-development in developing countries.
UN-HABITAT and UNDP hold first city consultations on HIV/AIDS

The first city consultations on tackling the scourge of HIV/AIDS have been launched by UN-HABITAT’s Urban Management Programme in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Seeking to bridge the communication gap that exists between municipal, civil society and community groups that exists in so many countries around the world, the idea is to develop a new shared vision and joint action strategy against the disease.
Tibaijuka hails good relations between UN-HABITAT and ILO

UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka has praised the good working relationship between UN-HABITAT and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Mrs. Tibaijuka said that ILO’s approach to providing work for the poor is essential for slum upgrading and for sustainable urbanization.

Global Parliamentarians on Habitat adopts Berlin Declaration on helping slum dwellers

The Fourth Global Forum of Parliamentarians on Habitat, which was held in Berlin, Germany, on 12-14 May 2003, adopted the Berlin Declaration calling on governments to increase financial support for the realization of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of improving the lives of 100 million slum dwellers by the year 2020. Governments were also called upon to ensure the availability of predictable financial resources for UN-HABITAT to strengthen its work on poverty alleviation.
Cuban city of Bayamo gets new urban revival plan

Cuba’s second oldest city, Bayamo, has signed up to a new Urban Pact supported by UN-HABITAT and the government of Belgium designed to tackle a range of environmental problems that have been slowing its development.
UN-HABITAT at the World Water Forum in Japan

UN-HABITAT will play a key role at the 3rd World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan, to mark World Water Day on 18 March, where it will raise issues of concern about how cities cope with water management. At the opening ceremony, the agency will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Asian Development Bank aimed at forging a new Water for Asian Cities partnership similar to UN-HABITAT's highly successful Water for African Cities programme.

New slums developing in cities around the world

New research by UN-HABITAT's Global Urban Observatory (GUO) shows that slums are increasing in cities around the world, especially in Asia, Africa, Latin America where insecurity of tenure is dramatically higher compared to wealthy nations in Europe and North America.
