Shouting their message in full volume to more than 500 participants at the first African Hip-Hop Summit in Newtown, Johannesburg, leading Hip-Hop artists from around the world teamed up with UN-HABITAT last month to help give young people a voice in their affairs.

World Habitat Day was celebrated in towns and cities around the world on Monday at ceremonies, seminars and meetings attended by many government and local authority representatives to reflect on the state of human settlements, especially the living conditions of the urban poor and their basic right to adequate shelter. |

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October each year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements, especially the living conditions of the urban poor and their basic right to adequate shelter. This year the theme of World Habitat Day on Monday 3 October 2005 is The Millennium Development Goals and the City.

| UN Special Envoy arrives in Harare |

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Human Settlements Issues in Zimbabwe is visiting the country this week to assess the scope and extent of the recent mass evictions, known as Operation Murambatsvina (Operation Restore Order), which according to unofficial estimates, has affected over 200,000 people.

| US Mayors pass resolution supporting African Development |

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, attended the annual US Conference of Mayors in Chicago and called upon them to provide support to the Commission for Africa's conclusions and to join the Commissioners in calling on world leaders to act on the recommendations. She went on to emphasise to the assembled mayors from across the United States that the report highlighted the problems of rapid urbanisation in Africa, which was considered to be the second most important challenge facing Africa after the AIDS pandemic.

Didier Awadi, one of Francophone Africa's most prominent rap artists, and winner of the 2003 Radio France International ‘World Music Award', has been nominated as a UN-HABITAT “Messenger of Truth” for his contribution to raising awareness among African youth of the commitments made by the Heads of State to achieving the Millennium Development Goals which aim to halve world wide poverty by 2015. On behalf of the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Mrs. Anna Kajumolo Tibaijuka, and Kenya 's Minister for Local Government, Hon. Musikari Kombo, presented a certificate to Didier Awadi at a ceremony at the Alliance Francaise in Nairobi.

UN-HABITAT, through its Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People, is organizing, in cooperation with the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) and the Ismailia Association of Environment and Development Training Center, a Training of Trainers and a Pilot Workshop on Leadership and Management Skills for newly elected Palestinian Mayors in Ismailia, Egypt, during the period 14 –26 May 2005. H.E. Mr. Khaled Qawasmei, Minister of Local Government, Palestinian National Authority, and H.E. Mr. Fouad Saad Eldin, Governor of Ismailia, will honour the opening ceremony of the Workshop on 20 May 2005 . The participants include 13 Trainers and 21 newly elected Mayors from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

| Long-term tsunami reconstruction |

"Once the humanitarian crisis is over, the cameras tend to leave just as the real hard work starts. I have therefore come to Banda Aceh and Nias at this critical time to see for myself how UN-HABITAT can help with the transition from relief to reconstruction,"Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, said during a visit to the region this week. "I am particularly pleased to be here at the same time as the launch of the Indonesian Government’s Blue Print for Reconstruction and Rehabilitation in order to see how we can support the national government in implementing their plans."

UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, told the twentieth session of the Governing Council examining UN-HABITAT’s work programme and budget for the 2006-2007 biennium that the agency’s main focus would be implementation of the Millennium Declaration targets on slums, urban water and sanitation, urban governance, disaster management and gender mainstreaming. |

| Sounding the alarm on forced evictions |

Saying that the Millennium Development Goals targeted the significant improvement millions of slum dwellers by the year 2020, the Executive Director said not only was the global community falling short of this target with an additional 50 million people having been added to the slums of the world in the past two years, but that the practices of forced evictions were worsening the lives of millions of urban poor each year. |

| Dubai Awards for best practices in human settlements |

The 2004 Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment will be conferred on Monday to an international array of 10 winners from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Iran, Kenya, Palestine, Spain, Togo, and Uzbekistan.
