| Assisting local authorities in Iraq |

Baghdad, 6 Dec 07
UN-HABITAT and six United Nations agencies have teamed up with the Government of Iraq to launch a new initiative aimed at boosting the capacities of local authorities to carry through development plans in partnership with the private sector and local communites.
The programme will be conducted in Sulaymaniyah, Babel, and the Marshlands in a bid to stimulate local economic development and improve local infrastructure and basic services, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said in a news release. |

Mrs. Tibaijuka received the new Permanent Representative to UN-HABITAT from Eritrea on 5 December 2007. She told the envoy, Mr. Salih Omer Abdu, that under the first United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the period 2002-2006, UN-HABITAT had implemented the low-cost housing delivery system for Eritrea. |

| Training for better cities in Nigeria |

Abuja, 20 Nov 07
UN-HABITAT conducted an urban management course for Nigerian ministers, municipal officials and other experts last week to help 12 specially selected cities improve their urban governance as part of a programme finance by the Urban Development Bank of Nigeria. The idea is to conduct rapid surveys in each city aimed at helping them identify problem areas and then finding the best solutions. |

| Working together in making Kosovo cities safe and just |

Various activities were held in different parts of Kosovo to mark the 2007 World Habitat Day organized jointly by city municipalities and UN-HABITAT’s Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme ‘Making Better Cities Together’. The focus of the activities was on looking for ideas which can be implemented through cooperation with various stakeholders and would lead to increased safety of women and children; safer public spaces open to various social, ethnic, and age groups; safer school environments and disaster prevention. |

Professor Martha Schteingart of El Colegio de Mexico, (Mexico City) is the winner of this year’s UN-HABITAT Lecture Award. The Award recognises outstanding and sustained contribution in the field of human settlements. Professor Schteingart delivered the winning lecture entitled “Urban Problems and Policies in Latin America: Truths and Fallacies” on 4 October, 2007 during the international conference on ‘The State of Safety and Security in World Cities, 2007’ in Monterrey, Mexico. |

| Making Polish cities safer |

Senior Polish officials pledged on World Habitat Day to do all they can to make the country’s cities safer and more inclusive for all their citizens.
“The quality of life in our cities depends to the great extent on the level of security. We are very much interested in learning how spatial planning may improve security of city inhabitants,” Poland’s Minister of Construction, Mr. Miroslaw Barszcz, said in a speech marking World Habitat Day. |

| UN-HABITAT loses a staff member in Iraq |

Mr. Nazhad Mustafa, Officer-in-Charge of the UN-HABITAT office in Erbil, Northern Iraq, Iraq passed away on 1 October 2007 at the age of 61 after a brief illness. Mr. Nazhad, a civil engineer and quantity surveyor joined UN-HABITAT in 1998 at the beginning of the Oil-for-Food Programme and has ever since made a very positive contribution to UN-HABITAT's rehabilitation programmes Iraq. He was a valued and respected senior member of the UN-HABITAT Iraq team. He leaves his wife, two daughters and two sons. |

| The Hague prepares to mark World Habitat Day |

As part of celebrations to mark this year’s World Habitat Day, UN-HABITAT and its partners have organized global celebrations focusing on urban safety and security in The Hague, The Netherlands, 1 - 2 October. As part of the celebrations, a conference will bring together professionals working at all levels to address the challenges of urban safety and security in the developed and developing countries. The keynote speakers at the event will be welcomed by the host Wim Deetman, Mayor of The Hague and chairman of the United Cities and Local Governments’ Committee on City Diplomacy, and members of the Dutch government including Bert Koenders, Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation and Ella Vogelaar, Dutch Minister for Housing, Communities and Integration. Mr. Jan Pronk, former Dutch minister and former Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Sudan, will chair the conference. |

The profile reflects results of the city and national consultation that were conceived as a partnership platform, co-developed with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the Lusaka City Council, the Ministry of Finance, CARE International, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Ltd., parastatal organizations such as the National Housing Authority, and the non-governmental organization Zambia Low-Cost-Housing-Programme.

| World Water Week: Water for Thirsty Cities |

World Water Week opened in the Swedish capital this week with impassioned warnings by the Prime Minister, Mr. Frederik Reinfeldt, and UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, that the world was not doing enough to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people without safe access to water and basic sanitation by 2015. |

| Experts to discuss transparency in land administration |

UN-HABITAT and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), in cooperation with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) have held a three-day expert group meeting on Transparency in Land administration at the UN headquarters in Nairobi , Kenya on 29-31 January 2007.
Land remains a highly complex and contentious issue, UN-HABITAT said in a statement. “It is a critical element in achieving target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals on “Cities without slums”. It is also a critical element in the wider development agenda. There is a clear and urgent gap between the vast demand for skills in this area, and the capacity to deliver at different levels. |
