UN-HABITAT has been working to build and strengthen financial management systems at the local government level in Somalia for over a decade. Having started in 2001 with only one district in Somaliland under the Berbera Technical and Institutional Assistance Programme, the current phase of the intervention is being carried out as an integral part of the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery, and now covers nine districts in Somaliland and four in Puntland. Extension to one district in south central Somalia is planned.

Scroll Winner gets Housing and Urban Development South-South Transfer award

Un Techo Para mi Pais (A roof for my country), a youth-led NGO and winner of the Scroll of Honour in 2009, won the Housing and Urban Development South-South Transfer award for mobilizing 250,000 young volunteers to build of more than 73,000 transitional housing for families in slums or affected by natural disasters, and for transferring its innovative approach to 19 countries across Latin America.
Tibaijuka appointed Minister of Housing, Tanzania

Former executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Mrs Anna Tibaijuka, has been appointed the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements for the Republic of Tanzania.

Mrs Tibaijuka retired from the UN in August this year after heading up the Human Settlements Programme, and previously the Commission for Human Settlements, for ten years.

In October, she was elected unopposed to parliament in her home country of Tanzania

Population of African cities to triple

The population of African cities is set to triple over the next 40 years, warns UN-Habitat’s new report, The State of African Cities 2010: Governance, Inequalities and Urban Land Markets which was launched yesterday evening, in Bamako, Mali, during the 3rd African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD III).
