Regional Workshop on "Citizen Engagement in Participatory Budgeting in Africa"

More than forty African mayors, councillors, government officials, directors of local authorities, city treasurers, and resource persons from civic organizations, private sector, and partners in decentralized governance and capacity building converged at a three-day Regional Workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe on 6-8 March 2007 to explore practical ways of engaging citizens in local budget formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Experts to discuss transparency in land administration

UN-HABITAT and the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), in cooperation with the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) have held a three-day expert group meeting on Transparency in Land administration at the UN headquarters in Nairobi , Kenya on 29-31 January 2007. Land remains a highly complex and contentious issue, UN-HABITAT said in a statement. “It is a critical element in achieving target 11 of the Millennium Development Goals on “Cities without slums”. It is also a critical element in the wider development agenda. There is a clear and urgent gap between the vast demand for skills in this area, and the capacity to deliver at different levels.

UN-HABITAT and ILO hold training workshop on Public Private Partnership

Turin, 14 July 2006 - The International Labour Organisation’s Training Centre in Turin hosted a workshop on Pro-Poor Public Private Partnerships from 10-14 July 2006. This collaboration of UN-HABITAT with ILO builds on the successful experience of a previous joint training activity under the thematic banner of “Decent Jobs and Better Services.”
UN-HABITAT and MASHAV hold first joint urban training seminar

Some 26 participants last week successfully took part in a Training of Trainers workshop as part of a joint initiative between UN-HABITAT and the Centre for International Cooperation of Israel (MASHAV).
UN-HABITAT trains the first group of the newly elected Mayors in the occupied Palestinian territories

UN-HABITAT, through its Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People, is organizing, in cooperation with the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) and the Ismailia Association of Environment and Development Training Center, a Training of Trainers and a Pilot Workshop on Leadership and Management Skills for newly elected Palestinian Mayors in Ismailia, Egypt, during the period 14 –26 May 2005. H.E. Mr. Khaled Qawasmei, Minister of Local Government, Palestinian National Authority, and H.E. Mr. Fouad Saad Eldin, Governor of Ismailia, will honour the opening ceremony of the Workshop on 20 May 2005 . The participants include 13 Trainers and 21 newly elected Mayors from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Italy releases funds for implementation of Serbian housing programme

UN-HABITAT this week received 5.9 million euros from the Italian Goverment to start implementation of a new social and housing integration programme for tens of thousands of war refugees and other vulnerable people in Serbia.
