UN-Habitat Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos on Tuesday delivered a speech during the opening ceremony of Africities in Dakar, Senegal. Later Dr. Clos met the President of Senegal Macky Sall, during which the issue of flooding which recently affected most cities of Senegal including Dakar the Capital City, was the main topic. |

| Because I am a Girl: Urban Programme project launch |

A workshop to discuss activities for the Because I'm a Girl: Urban Programme (BIAAG UP) joint Plan International, Women In Cities International (WICI), and UN-HABITAT project was organized in Hanoi last month. The project is part of a programme which seeks to engage girls in cities around the world to explore questions around gender inclusion, right to the city and safe cities. BIAAGE will be carried out in five cities globally including Cairo, New Delhi, Hanoi; Kampala, and Lima. |

UN-Habitat and Cellent AG, the Austrian coordinator of the European Union's Future Policy Modeling (FUPOL) consortium, teamed up with the Kenyan authorites at a two-day seminar this month to take advantage of the country's technology boom so that people in every walks of life can use their mobile telephones and other devices to join in programmes aimed at helping combat poverty, especially in urban slums. |

| Improving governance through waste management |

Puntland, Bossaso, 7 Nov 12
Solid waste management projects and a solar street lighting project are improving sanitation, hygiene, health, environmental conditions, and living standards in three municipalities in Puntland – Bossaso, Gardho, and Garowe. The projects address service delivery in the solid waste sector and increase the protection of vulnerable urban populations through better street lighting. These activities are under the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery, and it was established that only those municipalities with functional councils could receive the grant of USD 75,000. |

| Mogadishu markets rehabilitated |

Mogadishu, 7 Nov 12
SAACID has been partnering with UN-Habitat since 2005 to build local government capacity in all 16 districts in Mogadishu and rehabilitate high-priority public sector infrastructure throughout the city. Barduuro Market in Hamarweyne District was built in 1972, under the regime of Siad Barre.
