Let me first say how honoured we all are for your presence Mr. Director General and how grateful we are for the unparalleled support that you have extended to the United Nations and to other International Organisations participating in the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

I am honoured and privileged to address this welcoming session of this International Seminar on Sustainable Public Transport for Africa. Before starting, I would like to request a one-minute silence in honour of our dear colleague, Brian Williams who passed away almost one month ago. Brian was a highly respected professional and an acknowledged expert in his field of energy and transport. He was also a very loving and caring father.

His Highness called upon the international community to mobilize resources and effectively contribute in planning to in create a physical livable environment enabling the urban poor to live in a safe and sustainable environment.
PLANNING NEEDED AS COMMONWEALTH CITIES DOUBLE IN SIZE IN A GENERATION  

By 2025, UN projections suggest that almost 1.2 billion people will be living in the Commonwealth’s urban areas. Today the figure is about three-quarters of a billion. Every day it increases by 65,000.
