It is an honour and a pleasure for me to address this 12th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. As the Director General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi, I am delighted that this conference is being held in Africa in this beautiful city of Accra. Although the Conference will address global issues of interest to all countries, this venue should provide an excellent setting and opportunity to pay attention to some of the specific issues facing Africa, the continent, as we all know, continue to lag behind others in our common pursuit of global peace and prosperity.

The year 2007 is a very special year. It marks a major turning point in human history. For the first time, half of humanity is living in towns and cities. We are at the beginning of a new urban era. And with this new era comes a new challenge, the challenge of sustainable urbanisation.

It is our occasion to remind the world, our leaders and our citizens, that the first Monday every October is an occasion to be ever alert and vigilant to the great urban changes sweeping our planet. And so it gives me great pleasure, and indeed great honour, to thank Your Worship, Mayor Deetman, for so kindly offering to host the 2007 global celebration of World Habitat Day in this wonderful and great city. In the same breath, I also wish the Honourable Ministers, Mr. Koenders, and Ms. Vogelaar, to know how deeply grateful we are for the continuing very generous financial and political support that the Government of The Netherlands has always shown the United Nations and especially, our agency, UN-HABITAT.

Message By Anna Tibaijuka Executive Director of UN-HABITAT and Director General of UNON On The Occassion Of International Youth Day
Nairobi, Kenya
I am particularly pleased by the theme of this year's observance of International Youth Day: "Be Seen, Be Heard” It is a most appropriate theme. With over 200 million youth living in poverty, 130 million illiterate, 88 million unemployed and 10 million living with HIV/AIDS, the case for a renewed commitment to working with youth for attaining the Millennium Development Goals is vital. Young people must be seen as equal partners in achieving these Goals and in realizing the Global Partnership Initiative. As you are all aware, we are at the halfway mark to the target date of 2015 for attaining these goals, and the time has come for accelerated action.

The QEII Conference Centre,Westminster, London
I would like to start by thanking the Royal Town Planning Institute for inviting me to address you today. I would like to congratulate the Institute, and particularly Jim Claydon, its President, and Robert Upton, its Secretary-General, for giving a high profile to issues of international development in your Convention. I understand Robert is unwell and I wish him an early recovery. I would also like to acknowledge Clive Harridge, your Immediate Past President, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the World Urban Forum in Vancouver last year. The RTPI made a powerful contribution to the Forum, a gathering of over 10,000 people from around the world, and its effort was crucial in putting planning back on the international agenda, from whence it has been missing for at least the last twenty years.
